How to Start Cycling: Best Tips for Beginner Riders

di Ruby Choi 26 Aug 2025 0 Commenti

Cycling has many great benefits. It helps you get fit and stay healthy, both physically and mentally. Plus, you can save money and help the environment by biking instead of driving or using public transport. Riding a bike is also a good way to relieve stress and enjoy the outdoors. If you’re not sure about cycling yet, remember you might make new friends or involve your family, creating chances for weekend adventures or exploring new places. Check out our beginner cycling tips: biking could change your life, and it’s never too late to start!

How to learn to ride a bike

It's not right to think that everyone learned to ride a bike when they were kids. Not everyone had a bike, and some people couldn't afford one, had no place to keep it, or weren't allowed to learn. The good news is that learning as an adult is completely possible—start with balancing, practice in a safe open space, and gradually build up to pedaling with confidence.

Tips for beginner riders

1. Buy your bike from a local shop

Even if you know your size, your local bike shop can check your measurements to make sure the bike fits well and is comfortable. They can help you set it up, likely offer a free six-month service, and answer any questions you have later. Getting expert advice now can save you money in the future.

If you're unsure about what type of bike to choose, here's a simple guide: A road bike designed for endurance, which has a more comfortable shape, is a great option for beginners. If you want to ride on rough surfaces or different terrains, consider getting a gravel bike or adventure bike, which have multiple spots for adding accessories and can fit wider tires. A cyclocross bike is also a quick and enjoyable choice for these types of riding.

2. Get comfortable on your bike

Here are some simple tips for all riders who want to ride comfortably and prevent injuries, even if they are doing their own bike fitting.

To find the best saddle height, place your heel on the pedal when it’s at the lowest point. When you set your saddle height, your leg should be straight, and then when you clip in, there should be a little bend in your knee. Also, have a slight bend in your elbows. You'll know your reach is good if you can’t see the front wheel hub under the handlebars when you’re riding in a comfortable position.

3. Learn how to fix a puncture

Flat tires are something everyone experiences. Always carry a repair kit that includes a spare tube, tire levers, a mini-pump, and a multi-tool. It's important to learn how to safely change a tube. Knowing how to fix or replace a tube will help you save time and avoid frustration while you're riding.

Coospo X1 bike pump

We recommend using Coospo's new generation X1 air pump. It is small in size but has sufficient kinetic energy and does not overheat.

4. Invest in a few key pieces of kit

Cycling might seem like a costly hobby at first. While it can get expensive, it doesn’t have to be. You don’t have to buy a whole new set of clothes to feel comfortable.

Before you begin learning to ride a bike as an adult, it's a good idea to buy a quality cycling helmet. Fortunately, a great helmet doesn't have to be the priciest option.

Coospo PIXEL bike light

Another important purchase is bike lights. The Coospo PIXEL bike light has an anti-glare beam, making it safer and more comfortable to use. It features a strong Luminus LED and a large battery, providing up to 2 hours of use in bright mode, and a maximum runtime of up to 24 hours.

Full cycle clothing isn't necessary, but having some items can make your bike rides much more comfortable throughout the year. One essential item is a good pair of winter cycling gloves.

The best cycling shorts for men and women, or winter tights, will definitely make you more comfortable. If you want to feel even better, adding a base layer and a long sleeve cycling jersey can help improve your experience even more.

5. Join a cycling club

From the outside, a cycling club may seem like a group of skilled, confident riders in tight clothing. However, they are usually friendly and ready to help with any questions you have about bikes, repairs, or routes. A cycling club has a lot of helpful information.

6. Don't put up with saddle discomfort

Saddle discomfort is common but solvable. A few pointers:

The right saddle should support your sit bones, not your soft tissue, so its shape is more important than how much padding it has.

Wear padded shorts or bibs (without underwear underneath) to help, and take your time to get used to the saddle.

If you still feel uncomfortable, consider changing the saddle position or trying a different saddle, and get professional advice if needed.

7. Be confident on the road

Confidence builds with practice. Learn the traffic rules, signals, and ride in the same direction as cars, while using hand signals for turns. Riding safely and being aware of your surroundings will help keep you safe.

Ride at least a metre from the road's edge. This helps you avoid obstacles like potholes and makes other drivers give you more space when they pass. Remember to be confident but not rude.

8. Practice some basic techniques

You don't have to start by racing down steep mountains, but learning some basic skills will help you feel more confident.

Remember to use your brakes properly. The front brake is more powerful, so practice using it gently with the rear brake instead of pulling the lever hard.

When you're turning, make sure to slow down to a safe speed before you reach the bend. It's better to brake ahead of time rather than wait until you're in the turn and panic because you're going too fast. If you're taking a sharp corner, keep your outside leg extended and don’t pedal. You can check our guide on how to corner a road bike for simpler steps.

To become a better climber, try to keep pedaling as you approach a hill to maintain your speed. Stand up on the pedals now and then to stay comfortable.

9. Eat and drink as you ride

If you ride for more than 90 minutes, bring a snack like a cereal bar or a banana, and try to eat something every hour. Cyclists often keep water in a bottle on the bike frame. It might take some practice to grab the bottle and drink while pedaling, but it’s worth it.

10. Don't do too much too soon

Cycling is easy on your bones and joints, making it a great way to lose weight and get fit without straining your body. It offers many other benefits too. However, if you push yourself too hard, you might feel tired, hurt yourself, or get bored.

To avoid this, increase your cycling distance gradually. You can create a training plan or follow one if you have specific goals. Remember to rest enough and keep the bigger picture in mind. Aim for steady progress towards a happier, fitter, and healthier you over time!
