How to Know If You’re Getting Faster: Ways to Measure Cycling Performance

You’ve been training consistently for months, and naturally, you want to know whether that work is actually improving your fitness. You want clear evidence that you’re getting faster. There are several ways to measure progress, but it’s important to ask the right question. Looking at a single metric, such as your threshold pace, speed, or power, doesn’t always tell the full story.

Most training software and apps estimate your pace, speed, or power across different effort levels, or training zones, using a standard performance curve. They typically use your lactate-threshold pace, speed, or power to estimate performance across the entire range of intensities. However, individual athletes rarely follow the same curve. Differences in physiology and training focus can significantly affect how performance develops at different intensities. For example, a strong emphasis on Zone 2 training may produce greater gains at lower intensities, while high-intensity training can lead to larger improvements at the upper end of the curve.

Because of this, the better question isn’t simply, “Am I getting faster?” Instead, ask: “Am I getting faster at the specific effort level I’m training for?” The pace, speed, or power you test should ideally match either the demands of your event or the type of effort you’ve been focusing on in recent training. This is important because your performance is closely linked to the type of training you do. If you haven’t trained a particular intensity, you shouldn’t expect to suddenly perform well when testing it.

With that in mind, there are several useful tests you can use to measure your pace, speed, or power at different effort levels and get a clearer picture of your cycling or endurance training progress.

How Can You Test Fitness and Speed?

Threshold-Effort Tests

Threshold tests are a classic way to measure performance at higher intensities. They can help estimate your race-relevant pace, speed, or power, while also helping establish training zones.

The basic structure is simple: warm-up → short hard efforts → recovery → timed maximum effort → cooldown. Pacing is important. Start controlled, settle into a pace you can barely sustain, and aim to finish strong without saving too much for the final sprint.

Typical test options include:

  • Swim: 1,000 yards or meters
  • Bike: 20–30 minutes or 20 km
  • Run: 30 minutes or 5 km

The test should feel hard and uncomfortable, so it’s not something you need to do frequently.

Sub-Threshold-Effort Tests

Sub-threshold tests use repeated intervals and are useful for tracking progress throughout the training season. They can show whether you’re able to maintain a faster pace, speed, or power at a given effort level.

They can also reveal fatigue resistance. If your pace, speed, or power stays consistent across the intervals while your heart rate remains relatively steady, it’s a good sign that your endurance at that intensity is improving.

A typical session includes a warm-up, short preparation efforts, recovery, repeated intervals, and a cooldown. Choose longer intervals when testing race-specific endurance or fatigue resistance, and avoid starting the first interval too hard.

Endurance-Effort Tests

Endurance tests look less like traditional tests and more like a normal long bike ride or run. They’re particularly useful for evaluating performance at Zone 2 intensity and your ability to maintain pace, speed, or power over longer durations.

During the workout, aim for an effort that is steady and conversational. Pay attention not only to your pace, speed, or power, but also to your heart rate and perceived effort. If these remain stable throughout the session, it indicates good endurance and fatigue resistance.

How to Interpret Your Test Results

When reviewing test results, it’s easy to focus only on the numbers and treat them as a simple pass or fail. But pace, speed, and power can be affected by sleep, recovery, nutrition, fatigue, weather, and course conditions.

For more meaningful comparisons, try to repeat tests under similar conditions, using the same course and equipment when possible. Make sure you’re well-rested and properly fueled, and consider factors that may have influenced your performance that day.

Most importantly, use your results as training feedback, not a final judgment on your fitness. Look at changes in pace, speed, power, heart rate, and fatigue resistance, then use what you learn to guide your next training sessions. One test is only one piece of the puzzle.

Other Ways to Track Your Cycling Progress

Formal fitness tests are useful, but you don’t have to test yourself every time you want to know whether you’re improving. Your regular rides can provide plenty of useful clues when you look at the right data.

Average speed is one of the easiest metrics to follow, but it should always be considered alongside the route, elevation, wind, and riding conditions. A faster average speed on a similar route and under similar conditions can be a good sign of improved fitness.

Power can provide an even clearer picture. If you can produce more power at the same perceived effort, or maintain the same power with a lower heart rate, your fitness may be improving. Using a power meter to track power over the same interval or route can also make changes easier to spot over time.
